Some local TV stations that produced in-depth solutions journalism projects made community engagement a major part of their efforts.

Their strategies ranged from public discussions to social media outreach. Several stations sent staffers to community events to both promote the project and to solicit viewer questions in person. Newsrooms that invested in engagement said they received positive feedback and encouragement to keep going with their solutions journalism efforts.

Other newsrooms doing solutions journalism--including public radio and TV, print, and digital-only outlets–have employed a wide range of engagement strategies, from walking tours to storytelling events. This engagement toolkit shares strategies, tactics and best practices from news organizations that have reimagined their coverage by listening to their communities to better understand their needs.
