Set Clear Goals

The success of solutions journalism can depend in large part on the topic and timing, as well as the journalists assigned.

  • Avoid confusing solutions journalism with a branded TV consumer franchise that responds to and solves viewers’ problems.
  • Encourage I-team reporters accustomed to exposing problems to use those same skills to investigate how solutions work or why they don’t.
  • Prepare for extra script approval that in-depth solutions journalism may require so as not to overtax your editorial resources.

“The biggest challenge is making sure the solutions approach doesn’t get lost and [the story] becomes a feature.”
