Kiundu Waweru
Kiundu Waweru is a multiple award-winning journalist with over 10 years of experience in the newsroom where he specialized in Development and Solutions journalism, which later came in handy in his current role as science/ health and investigative media trainer and project manager.
He has led diverse teams across cultures in East Africa and beyond, while designing journalism/media relations curriculums on health, the environment, and the climate crisis. Until recently, Kiundu was the project Manager for the Internews Earth Journalism Network’s East African Media Coverage of Conservation and Wildlife Project which he successfully ran from September 2019 to June 30, 2024.
The EJN East Africa project sought to improve the quality and quantity of media coverage of wildlife and conservation issues with a particular interest in illegal wildlife trade in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Kiundu helped establish a network of over 2000 East African environmental journalists, while the project trained 1100 journalists, who produced over 400 in-depth investigative and solutions-based feature stories.
Since July 2024, Kiundu has led a journalism training on renewable energy for the Uganda based Africa Centre for Media Excellence (ACME), and on how to report on gender and climate change for Journalists for Human Rights (JHR). He is pursuing a Master of Arts in Digital Journalism degree at the Aga Khan Graduate School of Media & Communications. Kiundu is currently a media consultant with Earth Journalism Network, where he is following up and documenting impacts of the stories from the just ended East African project.
