Kris Vera-Phillips is an assistant professor at Southern Methodist University. She teaches news producing, multimedia skills, and ethics and diversity classes. Her research agenda investigates identity, representation, and power in news media and popular culture. She worked on research studies that examined journalistic objectivity and the ethical impact of editorial decisions on marginalized communities. Before her university work, Kris worked as an Emmy Award-winning journalist with over 14 years of experience producing news shows and special projects. Most recently, she worked as a multimedia producer for CapRadio in Sacramento and a senior news producer for KPBS News, the NPR and PBS station in San Diego.
