Eleven innovative newsrooms convened in Chicago last week to begin a journey in tying solutions journalism to revenue generation — a concept that has already been showing signs of success in the first Solutions Journalism Revenue Accelerator, which launched earlier this year.

“This Revenue Accelerator has been incredible so far,” said Brittany Harlow, operations manager and senior journalist at Verified News Network, one of the eight newsrooms that make up the first cohort. “The way we are learning how to expand our journalism offerings and monetize them simultaneously is really revolutionary.”

This second cohort of newsrooms, made up of mostly mid- to large-size outlets, will align their reporting on responses to social problems with innovative sponsorship opportunities. Like the first cohort (and future ones), they’ll get expert-led workshops, hands-on coaching and peer learning with which they’ll develop sponsorship strategies that reinforce both mission and revenue growth. We’ve joined forces with Blue Engine Collaborative to help guide this nine-month process.
