Criminal Justice

The criminal justice system exists to prevent crime and to provide justice and healing to crime victims. But that system – police, prosecutors, courts, jails, prisons, and services for people with criminal records in and out of incarceration – is not alone in that mission. Community groups standing apart from the system do so as well, particularly in response to the movements for racial equity in law enforcement and to end mass incarceration. These stories look at the effectiveness of both sets of players, and at responses sparked when the criminal justice system itself is the problem.
