River refuge: Public-private partnership works to restore silvery minnow habitat

State agencies worked with nonprofit organizations and a private landowner to create a more sustainable habitat for the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. They excavated 46,000 cubic yards of dirt to create water channels where the minnows could escape the fast-moving river. The reclamation crews worked quickly to preserve native plants and other wildlife, which also benefit from the water running more naturally.
