How These Makaha Neighbors Saved A County Park From Crime And Weeds

When blight and crime took over a treasured seaside park on Oahu and police seemed unable to help, a community group reclaimed the park and made it safe again by helping the people encamped there and cleaning up the signs of neglect. Instead of simply kicking out and threatening those who had made the park their home, neighbors got to know the people first. Some were moved to shelters and provided needed social and health services. Others simply left. With vigilance and care, the community group reclaimed Mauna Lahilahi Botanical Garden for healthy, family activities.
