How Lake View High School Students Are Using $10,000 In City Money To Improve Their Campus


Alderman Matt Martin worked with school leaders to involve students in determining how to spend discretionary funding for their school. After learning about local governance, participatory budgeting, and how infrastructure is funded, the students pitched ideas on how to improve their school. They eventually settled on adding outdoor seating as the best improvement within the $10,000 budget and surveyed the school to determine what type of seating. The voting process and having to navigate different bureaucratic hurdles gave the students an intimate look at how the city functions.
