Solutions journalism can contribute to newsrooms’ financial sustainability.

Our Revenue Project began in 2019 to test whether newsrooms could leverage solutions journalism to grow revenue streams. Our pilot project, which ended in March 2021, showed real promise. Together, the 12 participating newsrooms brought in $1.5 million from grants, sponsorships, donations and reader revenue.

We also produced a study that found solutions journalism attracts a loyal and engaged readership, opening up the potential to attract increased reader revenue.

The partners in our first cohort represented a cross-section of the media industry, including legacy publications and digital startups (including one radio station), and diverse-led outlets serving communities of color. In addition to receiving training and coaching from our staff and industry experts, newsrooms got small grants to support solutions reporting and business growth.

Moving forward, we intend to continue to help newsrooms develop strategies to build revenue around solutions journalism. We’ll also continue to gather evidence, produce research and set up experiments.
