Kampala

Kampala is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing cities on the planet right now and we are excited to be launching the SJN community in Africa. We are tired of countless stories highlighting conflict and poverty on this continent and want to highlight the many innovations that are working to drive positive social change. We look forward to connecting mainstream journalists, journalism students and university journalism departments to solutions-based journalism through story production, community trainings and networking events. This Hub is housed under the Media Challenge Academy, a growing accelerator training space for young journalists. Join us for training, meet and greet, skill share events, or SOJO Mixers.

The solutions journalism community in the Philippines started in June 2017 after a panel discussion between members of the development sector and print and online journalists, where concerns and issues were raised on the lack of solutions reporting. An online community on Facebook (called Solutions Journalism Philippines) is now running so reporters who are looking to do more solutions stories can be in touch with experts, individuals, and organizations that have initiatives or are knowledgeable of approaches that respond to social problems. There will also be pop-up discussions on solutions journalism in schools and campuses across the islands. As the Philippines is in an ostensible political and socioeconomic turmoil, the mission of the community is to make solutions journalism a mainstream practice and have more Filipino journalists pursue stories that circle around what can be done to address or improve the many problems our country faces.

The community covers a lot of geography—the entire state of Oregon and portions of SW Washington— and starting with our launch in March 2017, we’ve had strong participation by journalists and others interested in solutions reporting. Community members are split pretty evenly between freelance journalists and those affiliated with established media organizations. In addition, we benefit from strong relationships with journalism programs at the University of Oregon and the University of Portland.

The San Francisco Bay Area was the first place the Solutions Journalism Network launched a chapter. We have hosted a range of events, from a breakfast conversation with technology journalist Kara Swisher, to a panel discussion on covering what is working in conservation, to a holiday party with other Bay Area journalism groups. More recently, we’ve moved toward what we call a cohort model. We invite journalists to participate in free Solutions Journalism trainings, and teach them an additional skill in the process, then invite them to apply for freelance funds to support rigorous reporting on responses to social problems. Coordinator Cat Cheney is always interested in partnering to spread the practice of solutions journalism in the Bay Area and beyond, so if you’re interested in joining us, please get in touch.
