Children of immigrants often tend to be disadvantaged - both financially and educationally. Finland has restructured its education system to provide more one-on-one instruction for children born into poverty or those who have recently immigrated to Finland. The goal is to allow these children to become middle-class success stories one day.

In the midst of the international refugee crisis, immigrants and refugees often struggle in new countries, and they have trouble finding employment, housing, and education. The UN’s 2016 Summit for Refugees and Migrants encouraged host countries to find new ways to help migrants. Many creative solutions have resulted, including the Welcoming Cities & Counties Network, which provides resources to migrants in American cities; Salusbury World, which supports social enterprises such as Spice Caravan to train refugees in the UK; and Germany’s With Migrants for Migrants, which helps migrants’ access healthcare.

In Germany, where the political ramifications of more liberal refugee policies are becoming known, the city of Berlin has become home to an "Arabic-language literary and cultural center," housed in a public library. The center connects Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants with resources, literature, and translators while also allowing non-Arabic speakers to experience the collection. The center also hosts a variety of conversations, both light-hearted and heavily political.

Switzerland will soon be piloting a new algorithm to help refugees find jobs. The algorithm uses "machine learning to match geographic employment outcomes with refugees’ personal characteristics, such as gender, age and nationality." Researchers found that using the algorithm would have helped 41% more refugees to be employed between 2011 and 2016, but "real world" impact is yet to be measured. However, there are concerns about transparency and fairness.

Thousands of refugees have settled in Greece, many of them want to continue their education. One program helps them do that, “Education Unites: From Camp to Campus, gives 200 scholarships to refugees so they can attend classes at one of three U.S.-affiliated colleges in Athens and Thessaloniki.”After finishing the program students earn a certificate that could help them attend a U.S. affiliated school. ‘“One door has opened, and we’re now waiting for other doors to open as well.”
