Solutions Journalism University Hubs

Regional hubs are ensuring that journalism focused on responses to problems is integrated into the teaching, research and service of leading journalism programs.

Hub is written on a map of the United States

Launched in 2022, the four hubs are: Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication; Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications; Stony Brook University’s School of Communication and Journalism; and the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

As hubs, these schools are building and convening a national conversation about the importance of rigorous reporting on what is working as well as problems in bringing communities together to have a meaningful impact on the issues and challenges facing society.

Educational institutions are incubators of creativity, innovation and research, and the four hubs are well equipped to help transform journalism so that all people have access to news that is inclusive and helps them envision and build a more equitable and sustainable world.

Six outstanding journalism educators direct the future of the hubs:

  • Rebecca Blatt, Cronkite’s senior associate dean and professor of practice
  • Amanda Bright, co-director of Grady’s Solutions Journalism Hub, an academic professional at Grady and director of the Journalism Innovation Lab
  • Kyser Lough, also a co-director at Grady and an assistant professor specializing in visual journalism
  • Ralitsa Vassileva, also a co-director at Grady and a lecturer in broadcast news
  • Deborah D. Douglas, Medill’s director of the Midwest Solutions Journalism Hub and a senior lecturer
  • Laura Lindenfeld, dean of the School of Communication and Journalism at Stony Brook and executive director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science
